E-Mail and Angel help

Student E-Mail

Having recently signed up to take a course myself, I have discovered how confusing this can be. So here's my quick guide to fighting your way into your student e-mail.

First, click here: student webmail. This will provide you with some utterly confusing instructions. Ignore them, and click on the upper left-hand corner where it says "Click Here to Login to GTC Student Email". So far, so good.

Now, what exactly is your e-mail address? It is the combination of the first letter of your first name, the first six letters of your last name (should you be blessed with a family name shorter than six letters, fear not, just use all of them), and the last four numbers of your student id. If you don't know your student id, instructions for finding it are posted here.

Confused yet? For the theoretical student Katherine Jennifer Alfredsson Almondson, student id 850238196, the login would be:

kalmond8196@student.gwinnetttech.edu

Watch those extra t's in GwinnettttttttTech. There should be three, no more, no less.

All well and good, but now it wants a password! Don't panic. Your password is "GTC" and your birthday. Ms. Almondson was born January 15th of 1983. Her password is therefore GTC011583. GTC, "01" for January, "15" for the day of the month, and "83" for the year.

You're in! Now, the first thing you need to do, and it will force you to, is change your password to something harder for other people to guess and easier for you to remember. Unfortunately, you will have to change your password EVERY QUARTER, so if it's something you can vary relatively easily, so much the better.

Angel help:

Wouldn't it be nice if your Angel login and your e-mail login were the same? Well, HA!

Here's how to get into Angel:

Once again, you will need your student id, so if you've forgotten it, click here for instructions on how to find it, then write it on yourself with permanent marker. We have some good ones in the lab.

Now, on to business! You can get to Angel by clicking here, or anytime by using the Angel link in the sidebar.

Your login for Angel is 32_your 9-digit student id number. Yours will be 9002something. Katherine Jennifer's is 850238196 (poor thing), so her login would be 32_850238196. The first time and only the first time you login every quarter, you will use this as your password as well.

Before you are allowed to go any further, you will have to change your password. Ideally to something you can remember. You will have to do this every quarter, and the password is case sensitive, so consider just using numbers: your husband's niece's dog's birthday or something easy like that.

Now you are into Angel, but there's NOTHING THERE!

That's because the courses don't open until the first day of classes, so you won't be able to see them until then. If Banner shows you registered for a course, you are registered. Panic after the first week of classes. Actually, ask your instructor if he or she uses Angel, and then and only then panic if you can't see the course. (But you will be able to if there is an Angel shell for the class.)
